Pebbles

A grander dog could not be found.

He was kind and patient and noble.

He'll be in our hearts and thoughts always.

October 2000 (when his life really began!)  - November 22, 2006

"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true. To the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."                                                                                                                Cheryl Zuccaro

What the Lion is to the Cat
the Mastiff is to the Dog,
the noblest of the family;
he stands alone,
and all others sink before him.
His courage does not exceed
his temper and generosity,
and in attachment he equals
the kindest of his race.

Cynographia Britannica - 1800

Pebbles was the old man of the group.  He was a rescue from Nashville, TN.  Pebbles came to live with me as a foster dog in October of 2000.  Learn About Rescue

It was clear to me that he was so psychologically damaged by his previous life that he was not going to be placed in another home.  He got his name because I thought he was not smart enough to rate rocks. He was not dumb - he was terrified.  He came to me very fearful of people and dog aggressive.  It became apparent quickly that his dog aggression was probably a result of having been used in dog fighting because it seemed to be primarily defensive.  It did not take long and he completely recovered from his aggression and became the kindest and most congenial of dogs.   Pebbles loved all the campers.  Pebbles remained very shy of "strangers" (adult people - he adored children) and preferred to observe from a distance but was always curious and would sneak up behind a new person and give them a good sniff.

Pebbles was diagnosed with bone cancer in early October of 2006 and enjoyed his final days basking in attention and all the goodies he could eat!  Words can not begin the describe the empty place that has been left in all of our hearts with his passing.

Pebs was so tolerant                                        And if he laid on his back this is what happened

Dearest Friend

I lost my dearest friend today,
No finer could be found.
My love for you is utmost true,
It has no endless bound.

So hard to say,
"Good bye" to you,
Forever, trusting friend,
I'll keep you in my memories,
I promise till the end.

I Only Wanted You

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to
Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.  There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then together, you and your special pet cross the
Rainbow Bridge.
