Meet The Camp Counselors

Dimmit:

Dimmit is "short" for diminutive.  Dimmit was very small when he was rescued.  He and two siblings along with their Mama were rescued from a shelter in NC when the pups were about 3 weeks old by myself and a wonderful lady named Jane.  Jane and I shared fostering responsibilities and she had the first shift with Dimmit and massaged his deformed legs and rocked him night after night.  Jane adopted Dimmit's Mama and her name is Grace.  Dimmy and his Mama were near death but both have recovered beautifully.  The other 2 pups were in good shape and were successfully adopted to wonderful families.

Dimmit is a sweet boy even if he looks like a pugilist. He gets along with everyone but has a more rough and tumble play style and loves to run.  He is second in command and is a good leader.

The Pups

In March of 2005 I had a foster dog (Boxer) who was apparently pregnant. About a week after I figured out she was pregnant she gave birth to 6 beautiful, healthy pups on my bedroom floor.  This was my first experience with a pregnant dog, the birth process and raising a litter of puppies.  Unfortunately it was puppy season when the pups were at an adoptable age and despite my efforts to place them I was unable to find appropriate homes for them.  I decided that keeping them was better than placing them in homes I was uncomfortable with so I bought the property I am on now - fenced 7 acres for them and kept them.  I was able to place the pups mother (Calli).  Calli has come back to live with me as she has developed some profound neurological problem and is happy with her pups and stimulated by the campers.

Freckles:

Freckles is the highest energy pup of the group. She is the alpha female of the puppies.  She is quite sweet and loves to play and run.  Freckles ignores the dogs she is not interested in interacting with and occupies herself hunting chipmunks in the woods.  Freckles reminds me of a cute, perky little cheerleader.

Lucy:

Lucy is named after Lucy in the Peanuts comic strip.  She wants to tell everyone what to do, how to do it and when to do it.  She also loves to run and spends a lot of time digging in the woods.  She picks her playmates and loves to play with the "right" playmate but spends more time by herself than the other pups. With people she is very jealous and vocal and wants to be the center of attention.

Roscoe:

Roscoe is the alpha male of the pups.  He is a very benevolent leader and rarely if ever displays any behaviors that would demonstrate his alpha status.  Like a true alpha he leads with a calm attitude. Roscoe is "the man" and is most often quietly observing the activities.  He also loves to lead a good game of chase, keep away or tug.

Rose:

A Rose by another other name could not be any sweeter.  Rose is the most stand offish of the pups.  The sisters beat her up when she was a very young pup and so she is suspicious of new dogs.  She is able to "use her words" appropriately and is not afraid to tell others she needs her space. She does warm up quickly when she realizes nobody is out to get her and when someone strikes her fancy a more fun loving pup could not be found.

Frick:

Frick is the girl next door.  Frick gets a long with everyone and is All American Apple Pie.  Frick is always the first to welcome new campers and show them around.

Cosmo:

Cosmo is the goof ball of the group.  Coz was the first pup born and I thought he had possibly suffered oxygen deprivation ... I used to say that not only was there no one home but the lights are not even on.  I have come to realize that Cosmo is not so much "dim" as just goofy - he dances to his own tune. Cosmo is also a little standoffish and tends to feel defensive but warms up very nicely and loves a group romp.  He is the biggest in stature but thinks he is very small.

Each camp counselor has a different personality so there is a special friend waiting for each camper
